Dragged Into Sunlight: Hatred for mankind

03/05/11  ||  Khlysty

I have already expressed in the past my fondness for sick, demented and thoroughly vile death metal, as it’s being presented to the great unwashed by bands like Teitanblood, Ecoffination, Coffins and Dead Congregation. Well, it’s high time I added to this filthy lot Dragged Into Sunlight, the best export good Liverpool has to offer since time immemorial. I also have to give kudos to the guys at Prosthetic for re-releasing this slab of sickness, entitled “Hatred For Mankind”, thusly spreading the disease these limeys unleashed back in 2009.

“Hatred For Mankind”, what with its Charlie Manson samples, its completely deranged approach towards death metal, its filthy production, its bestial screams that pass for vocals, its atonal riffs and guitar stabs of noise, its uncontrolled drumming and its slightly-off rhythmic assault sounds less than another extreme metal record and more like a statement of intent. These guys seem genuinely disturbed about the reality of their surroundings and I would’ve really liked to see how the recording process of this beast went on. Was it like “hey, let’s play this riff and then this riff and put this bridge here” and so on? Or was it like “hey, I hate everyone today; how can I express this feeling with music”?

Don’t know. What I know is that listening to this record leaves me with a bitter residue of hatred? misanthropy? total abolition of all societal rules? in my mouth and makes me wanna scrub myself with lye, so as to rinse of the oily anger that spurts from the “songs”. This shit sounds much too real for comfort and I really don’t know where the band can go on from here and where would this path lead it. Bottom line is that if you like your death metal really out there and much too psychotic for comfort, “Hatred For Mankind” will lead you towards new paths of enlightenment. Just be careful of the rotten barbs…
